My brother is in incredibly good shape, (played D1 football) very strong but I’m not sure he has ever worked with kettlebells before…what is an appropriate weight to get him?

The key for losing weight is not difficult – consume less food and exercise more often – the problems surface when we in reality try to put that into practice! There are loads of opportunities to fail out there don’t you think?! I learned some good help by reading the web resource in the box below, they have loads of tips, I worked off 6 pounds by following their tips.
If you go to http://KettlebellReviews.org you can see info from a couple of different brands. I would suggest getting him one of the sets that come with three different sizes of Kettlebell, that way he can work his way up from the lightest to the heaviest. It’s also nice to have ones in different sizes, because the weight he’ll want to use will depend on the exercise he’s doing.
Even if he’s really strong, technique is so key when you’re training with kettlebells – a 16k/35# would probably be a good start for him. Once he gets down the basic form of swings, get-ups, etc., he could move up to a 24k/53# or more.
