@AmusingYeti True. But kettlebell sport is a distinctly Russian method of training with its own quirks (such as weight classes and specific movements, like the snatch). The kettlebell also has a distinct Russian history as a tool for weighing market goods. People started training with them similarly to how Roman Catholic athletes trained with churchbell clappers (the original dumbbells). And the Scottish used rocks with handles for the same reason: they were easily available and heavy.

@gtrgy888 There are actually records of kettlebell like training being used in Scotland prior to their use in Russia.

@keltronzero That’s the Russian national anthem.

I wouldn’t want you to feel like a philistine, but that’s the equivalent of me hearing the AMERICAN national anthem and asking “what’s with the cold war era music?”

The answer: Steve Cotter is a master of Russian kettlebells. He’s paying homage to the home country of his sport; a country that started about 50 years before America instigated the cold war to protect its dominance in foreign affairs.

Motherfucker broke one wrist when he was a kid, so he couldn’t do regular push-ups like the rest of his buddies at the martial arts school he was training at. So he started doing one-leg squats. He got to the point where he could do the pistols at the same rate that others were doing push-ups. He can do the pistol with two 32 kgs (2 x 70 pnds) kettlebells. He’s a mutant.
