KETTLEBELL TRAINING- whats a good weight?
Hi – I’m just wondering as to what weight kettlebell should i use to train with. I am quite a strong gal and have been using weights with my workouts for some time now. What kettlebell weight should i use to get a good work out and feel the pain. I want to ache all over!!!!

Thanks for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by Johnny!!!
Hey! To answer your question it all depends on you. You can go light and do a lot of reps, or you can go heavy and do a few reps. What I like to do is a weight that’s not to heavy but not to light and just mix that in with other exercise’s. Typically Jump Rope so I can keep my heart pumping.

Question by mike_three3: Who knows a good kettlebell workout dvd?

Best answer:

Answer by chardonn55
go to http://www.uskettlebells.com and go to the store and they have 3 different workout dvd’s that are good. I like the Kettlebells but I like Scott Sonnons circular strenth clubbell. It is simalar to the kettlebell but in club form and you can do more and provide a slightly different workout. With clubbell you can get more a complete circular (all direction) workout. take a look, you will be supprised.

i’m looking to purchase a 35 1b kettlebell. What are the best brand as far as quality and value. I can purchase a warrior hardware for $ 55 http://warriorhardware.com/ or should i spend the extra money and order one online and pay shipping. kettlebellusa.com has one for $ 65.

Answer by Ellen
Perform Better has good prices on kettlebells. I had heard from a trainer that the First Place Competition kettlebells that Perform Better sells are great, and I agree. They color-coat the bells so they are all the same size, but you can easily know which bell to grab based on size (when you have more than one).

Question by sassy: can anyone suggest a good kettlebell workout routine?
Im female, aged 28, good level of fitness,
I have a full double set of kettlebells from 4kg through to 32kg, and I know the correct names for the individual exercises.
Please can anyone suggest a good workout that will give me good cardio and all round body toning and strenthening. I want it to last about 40mins.

Best answer:

Answer by gtrgy888
First, welcome to kettlebells. They are cannonballs with handles. I assume you know correct form. If you don’t, do some serious research to avoid injury.

My favorite cardio killer workout at the moment is a simple but brutal mixture of kettlebell swings and calisthenics. I call it Bud Jeffrie’s Bastard after the RKC who invented it. It works the abs and posterior chain (the entire back of the body), both of which power about 80% of all locomotive movement. It has made me capable of running long distances, lifting heavy things, and seducing women with a steely gaze. The workout goes like this:

Do 10 swings (with both hands or 5 swings per hand) followed by 3 hanging leg raises. Do this with minimal rest until you’ve amassed 100 swings.

Your cardio endurance, muscle definition, and strength will develop very quickly once you can complete it nonstop in perfect form with a decent sized kettlebell. Work up slow or face the consequences.

For the hanging leg raise, you hang from a pullup bar with your shoulders tucked down and your arms and legs straight. Then, using your hip flexors and abs, you pull your straight legs up to touch the bar and slowly lower them. It is a very challenging movement. If you can’t do it yet, just pull your knees to your chest, straighten your legs, then slowly lower your legs back down. No swinging. Save that for the kettlebell. Keep your abs and glutes tight to avoid lower back injury. If your lower back hurts, stop working out and try again another day. Injuries aren’t productive.

Throughout the workout, occasionally replace leg raises with other strength calisthenics like 1 legged squats, 1 armed pushups, regular pushups, pullups, dips, or bodyweight squats.

If you do this about 2 times per week, you should get in great shape fast, depending on the size of the kettlebell.

Kettlebell Classes-the Key to Optimal Fitness

If you are sick and tired of trying every diet, magic weight loss pill and gym programme then why not try doing Kettlebell Classes and kettlebell training to supercharge your fitness?

In todays climate more and more people are seeking quick alternatives than slogging it out on the treadmill. Why is this? Well we all live busier lives than 100 years ago and we are becoming more dynamic and few people have time to even hold a conversation! It true, more of us are too busy to exercise and more people are finding it difficult to fit exercise in their daily lives. So what exercise should you do then if you are strapped for time?

Kettlebell classes are great for all round fitness. Not only are they fun and becoming popular but their challenge the 600 muscles in your body-and in fact every component of fitness like flexibility, anaerobic/aerobic fitness, balance, core stability, strength, power, agility, speed and quickness.

Well at Russin Kettlebells UK London, Jamie Lloyd who teaches Kettlebell classes regularly to both men and women explains….

Bent leg Deadlifts 2 arm Swings Military Press Single Arm Rows Straightleg Deadlifts Front Squats Sling Shots Side Bends

Take 1-2 Mins rest and repeat 3-5 times.

This is done as a circuit without any rest and the main focus is Strength and Conditioning for any level, and this cicruit is composed of doing two lower body exercises then follwed by two upper body excercises. This way the whole body is challenged and you get a complete workout in a short space of time.”

Both men and women can easily get the hang of kettlebells and you can progress quite quickly with them and get dramatic results. So if you are short of time and want to try something fun that gets you fantastic results then try Kettlebell Classes and kettlebell training.

Kettlebell guide the Weight Loss & Fitness tool

Kettlebells are the most effective training tool to hit the training circuit and it’s questionably the oldest. It shows just how simple a piece of training equipment can be compared to new fads. All you need to use a kettlebell is personal mobility and a few meters of space. This unique functional weight will shred fat, increase your fitness, strengthen your joints and condition your body into looking like an athlete.

History

Kettlebells were first mentioned in the Russian dictionary in 1704 and were originally used as counter-weights in the markets. It wasn’t until the workers in the market place started throwing these cannon balls around, that a new functional training tool was born! In 1913 the Russian magazine, Hercules declared that “Not a single sport develops our muscular strength and bodies as well as kettlebell athletics.” In addition to this Russia declared it as a priceless conditioning tool for the masses, helping with personal health.

So the history is there, if not a bit strange. But the question that always needs to be asked when approaching new techniques and tools, where’s the proof that this piece of training equipment works?

Let’s go back to Russia again before kettlebells got their international acclaim for weight loss, fitness and muscular conditioning. The 1980′s Russian athletics team swept gold across the board in the track and field throwing events and why, Kettlebells were used to increase power and endurance! Another example, which directly refers to two great nations with two different training habits, is when the Russian and US forces met; after the Soviet Union broke up, and started competing with each other. The Americans used press ups as a test of fitness, whilst the kettlebell snatch test was used by the Russians. The Americans had a disturbing discovery! What were the results?

“We’d be totally exhausted and the Russians wouldn’t even be catching their breath.” Says a member of the US Marines. “It turned out they were all working with kettlebells!”

The United States Secret Service has now instituted the 10-minute KB test into their regular training (10 minute max. rep snatches with 24kg = 250 reps).

Kettlebell Training

We have heard the results then. They obviously work, but what training routines and exercises do you do with the kettlebells?

Kettlebells can have limitless potential, if you are willing to keep on developing the training and pushing your body. It is a type of functional training that uses compound movements (full body exercises) to maximize your workout and achieve your goals faster.

The swing is the first move anyone will learn and is the gateway too progression. There are many exercises available once you are confident enough, like the double swing, clean and snatch. For further KB training routines, please visit our Kettlebell workout selection or even post your own exercise video or workout.

I would just like to send a quick message to all you ladies out there. Kettlebells; although a weighted exercise, will not transform you into a body builder! They will however sculpt and reshape your body, by reducing your fat and toning your body. The most of your worries will be all the attention you’re getting. Furthermore your girl friends may start being a bit jealous of your new slim physique. Proof of just how effective they can be is seen with Lauren Brooks, who is a kettlebell trainer and used them post pregnancy, with astounding results. We recommend a couple of articles she has written “Kettlebells for mums” and “The need to train like a man.” Search for her personal website on Google.

One last point to make about kettlebells which must be taken on board. Due to the great versatility of this training tool and its success in weight loss, fitness, endurance, toning and much more……….THEY BECOME ADDICTIVE!

Where to start

Kettlebelll training can be as hard as you want to make it. To begin with why not try a friend’s kettlebell. This will let you determine the weight you would like to use and whether or not you enjoy it. If you are flying solo with the kettlebells then we recommend the following weights to start with. 8kg / 12kg for woman and 12 / 16kg for men. lLondonkettlebells.com provide quality kettlebells individually or in sets e.g. a beginners set or Spartan set

Once a kettlebell is purchase it is imperative that you learn how to use them properly. This will prevent injuries and bad form, because remember that kettlebells can be dangerous. A good place to start would be to buy a kettlebell DVD, I would recommend Steve Cotter. Once you have learned the correct techniques it’s time to start building your fitness up and losing weight. We recommend that complete beginner start off with an interval workout shown below.

Beginners Intervals: 20 second swing set, followed by a 10 second rest.

The aim here is to see if you can increase how many sets you perform each time. Do this for the first week or so and it will create a strong platform for you to work off. Once you feel confident with your Kettlebell then why not try some of our workouts or add post your own. Furthermore if you get some great results from this amazing functional weight then tell people by adding a testimonial blog, posting a comment here or adding a video of yourself in action.

Question by Matt: Kettlebell training for fat loss/strength and tone?
I’m 22 years old 5’7 175lbs. I’m trying to get back in shape for the Army’s OCS(Officer Canidate School). I just started kettlebell training. I’d like to drop around 15 pounds and gain some strength as well. How long should i train every day with the kettlebell? what are the main exercises i should focus on? Any guidance is appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by J
I’ve been training with KBs for four months, three with a personal trainer and the last month on my own. I did a lot of research and have developed a five day per week schedule that works for my goals. As a woman, and military wife, fat loss was my primary goal but the increase in strength that I have seen has been a wonderful surprise.

A proper kettlebell workout is structured from five muscle groups/exercises:
1.) Pressing
2.) Pulling
3.) Quads
4.) Core
5.) Hamstrings

Ideally, one should choose one or two exercises from each group to make a workout. The exercises should be performed in the order I listed above to maximize proper form. When you are fresh you do your Military Presses or Jerks (Pressing) followed by Renegade Rows or Two Arm KB Rows (Pulling). Pressing and Pulling should be done together for optimal upper body development. Next work your quads, Single Leg Deadlifts or Goblin Squats. Next work your core; Leg Pass, KB Figure 8′s, Windmills and Slingshots. Finally finish with your Hamstrings; Alternating KB Cleans, High-Pull & Snatch Combo. Please note that all variations of KB Swings are also Hamstring exercises. For my purposes I add a 6th element to my workout that contains only swings. Swings are one of the most calorie-burning exercises you can do but they don’t require the precision of most Pressing and Pulling moves. I do combination sets of different swings to end each workout.

The exercises I listed above are the ones I’m currently using and have found to be quite effective. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/kettlebells.htm, this website has an extensive database of exercises and quite a few good KB articles.
Check youtube.com for demonstrations of most KB moves.

Concerning how many reps/sets and how long your workout should be; trust your body. I typically do 10-20 reps and 2-4 sets of each exercise per workout. When working out five or more days per week its not necessary to train to exhaustion. I use a 25 pound bell for everything except for swings. For swings I use either a 35 pound or two 25 pound bells. My workouts last about 40 minutes using one exercise from each of the five categories and about 100 swings to close it out. I wind-down with an additional 20 minutes of yoga type stretching.

I struggled with how often to workout. My trainer told me the max I needed was three times per week, but I didn’t feel I was getting the best results. One source I found wrote about the effectiveness of training 5-7 days per week with slightly less intensity than you would with only 2-3 days per week. Personally, I’ve found this to be the right answer for me. I no longer get sore from workouts and feel energized by intense daily activity.

I would advise training with a RKC instructor if possible when first starting out. Many KB exercises require precise form and most people need more than a workout DVD to master this. Learning it right from the beginning will better serve you in the long run. I bought my bells at a local Dick’s Sporting Goods store. I have the ‘GoFit’ brand which I DO NOT RECOMMEND. The bells are not flat on the bottom which makes exercises like Renegade Rows almost impossible.

Finally, even with the best possible KB workout, if you want fat loss you should pay attention to your diet. Check out The Warrior Diet, it may seem extreme at first but I’ve been practicing it for the last month and have had amazing results. I don’t crave junk food anymore and I’m within five pounds of my weight goal (even with putting on five pounds of muscle from KB)!

BEST OF LUCK!

A Few Good Reasons To Get a Kettlebell

Copyright (c) 2010 Caroline Radway

This simple object, simply a cast iron bell with a handle attached, has sculpted bodies for centuries. It has shaped Hollywood honeys and Olympic athletes, as well as Russian strongmen and Special Forces.

If it’s good enough for them, surely it’s good enough for you?

If you think you can’t possibly use something that is for such elite athletes, then you are in for a surprise, as you can use the kettlebell for fantastic results, even if you are a complete beginner to fitness.

So regardless of who you are, there are many reasons why a kettlebell is well worth adding to your workout arsenal:

The unique way you hold a kettlebell compared to a dumbbell means you challenge your core and stabilising muscles a lot more – so you get strong from the inside out. The kettlebell achieves this as it has an offset centre of gravity. You will become truly strong and balanced, not bulky, and reduce your risk of injury.

The ‘classic’ kettlebell exercises are dynamic and have a cardio effect – in fact, with a kettlebell in your possession, you will never need to use another piece of cardio equipment again!

Any dumbbell exercise you can do with a kettlebell – some exercises that feel awkward with a dumbbell feel much more comfortable with a kettlebell (so you can perform them more effectively) and others are more challenging with a kettlebell (so you get much better results).

There are so many exercises and methods of training available that you can’t possibly get bored – this means motivation to exercise is no longer an issue. The workouts are fun and varied, so you will be looking forward to your next workout, not dreading it.

You can exercise at home – you only need one kettlebell to get started and although you will probably want a collection you can adapt exercises to make them harder without having to increase the size of the kettlebell.

This means you no longer have to pay gym membership or waste time driving to the gym, or waiting in the gym for equipment to become available.

The dynamic kettlebell exercises are perfect for tightening the classic trouble spot – your butt! The exercises, such as the swing and snatch, require explosive power in the hips and therefore emphasise all the neglected muscles of the back of your body, shaping things up that you thought were beyond repair. Even cellulite will be reduced.

You will get flexibility, balance, strength, endurance and co-ordination, as well as a hot body!

What’s So Good About Kettlebells, Anyway?

This is what I asked myself for quite a long time before I ‘saw the light’! I was based in a gym and saw one of the other trainers using kettlebells with his clients and to be perfectly honest I thought it was all a bit of hype. The exercises looked dangerous and the clients were all getting bruised! I was sceptical at best…

Even when I finally got him to give me a ‘taster’ session I wasn’t completely convinced, I had a decent enough workout but just didn’t get what the big deal was.

I can’t even remember what sparked the mental shift from cynic to evangelist. One minute I’m happy with my dumbbells, the next I’m raving to all who would listen about a shiny round chunk of iron!

I bought a few DVDs and a couple of kettlebells and the addiction came pretty quick – the sheer versatility of the kettlebell intrigued me. I always thought ‘anything you can do with a kettlebell you can do with a dumbbell’ but how wrong I was!

The shape of the kettlebell and the way the weight is held means that performing what would be a simple dumbbell exercise becomes a whole new experience as there is an additional stability factor to consider.

The fact that the bell is designed to be swung is what really makes it stand out from the crowd, though. As soon as you add in the classic kettlebell exercises, like the swing and the snatch, the power of the kettlebell to transform your body and workouts becomes clear. You can get a killer cardio workout, while loading all your ‘behind’ muscles (back, butt, hamstrings…) that are usually underworked in most people. The era of the cross trainer was clearly over – cardio was just never going to be the same again…

Any exercise you can do with a dumbbell you can do with a kettlebell, sometimes feeling more comfortable and sometimes being a lot harder. You can use your kettlebell as a piece of cardio equipment or as an extreme strength tool. You can use a kettlebell to increase mobility and stability and even rehabilitate.

And they look so good, all in a line in the garage, smugly reminding you that you never need to pay gym membership again!

Best Kettlebell Workout Program – What’s So Great About Kettlebell Workouts?

Kettlebell workout routines are short and intense. They are easy to fit into even the busiest of schedules and provide great results. You can use kettlebells anywhere, meaning you can workout at home and don’t need to go to the gym three times a week! If you travel a lot kettlebells are great because they can easily fit in your car. Having this kind of flexibility with your workout routine will help you achieve better results, faster.

kettlebell workouts are fun and challenging. If you are doing a full kettlebell workout or kettlebells are just a part of your workout, they will be an exciting and an incredibly effective addition to your workout routine. Kettlebells require your full attention and are a very engaging way to exercise, it is nothing like half an hour on the treadmill. The exercises you do will require lots of secondary muscles that you wouldn’t normally use with most exercises.

Kettlebells are one of the most simplistic pieces of exercise equipment. Since they are basically just a ball and a handle they are very dynamic, you are unlimited in the number of different exercises you can do. You can use the humble kettlebell to target any muscle in the body. This also means that simple variations of exercises can target different muscles or increase resistance, giving you a tougher workout.

A kettlebell basically looks like a cannonball with a handle on it. They usually weight anything from two to forty five kilograms or between five and one hundred pounds. The variations in weight mean kettlebell workouts are suitable for basically any age or fitness level.

The problem with most people’s workout routines is that they are boring and repetitive. If you want to achieve long term fitness goals most people need a workout routine that is stimulating and enjoyable, one that they can look forward to. The swinging movements used in kettlebell workouts requires you to concentrate on balancing the kettlebell and controlling your movements. You do not need the same kind of focus when you are simply counting reps.

It is possible to do a full workout with just one kettlebell, however kettlebells of different weights can be used to target specific muscles. Exercising with a kettlebell will give you a full body workout as all the primary muscles will be used, your core muscles will get the best workout. When swinging the kettlebell simply altering the direction of motion or the movement will target a different muscle.

Kettlbell workouts are so effective because you need to use your whole body, not isolated muscle groups. They combine cardio, strength training and are excellent for fat loss. Since you are not just targeting isolated muscles you will gain a lot more functional strength. Functional strength means day to day tasks will become easier.

If you are tired of going to the gym then kettlebells offer a fun and convenient solution. Wether you are young or old, beginner or expert, kettlebells can be encorporated in to your workout routine.

Kettlebells can be bought online or at a sporting goods store.

Answer by Scottsays
If you are only going to buy one, I would get the lighter one – it will let you do more exercises. In fact, I use kettlebells quite a bit, and if I were going to just buy one, that is the size I would buy (16kg/35lbs) – I think its the most versatile. I would buy that one, then save up and buy the more as I went.

Of course this all depends on what you are doing with it, and your personal strength. If you can do most of the exercises easily with the 45, get that one.

A kettlebell is a cast iron weight, like a ball with a single looped handle on the top. Kettlebells are available in different weights ranging from 2 pounds to over 200 pounds. They were originally used by Russians as a fitness tool for a full body workout. These, kettlebells have now become one of the basic gym equipment worldwide. Unlike dumbbells, it is used for various swinging movements. Variants of the kettlebell include bags filled with sand or steel shot, water, or which take a variable number of plates. They also have a center of mass extended beyond the hand and allow for swing movements and release moves with added safety and added grip, wrist, arm and core strengthening due to the shifting fill material.

Kettlebell workout involves cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. It helps to increase stamina, build muscles and develop core stability. Kettlebells engage multiple muscle groups at the same time, providing a whole body workout in a short time. It burns more energy and improves agility. You can perform exercises with ketllebells in your home as they occupy little space.

Kettlebell training helps to accelerate fat loss and develop overall fitness. Athletes, weightlifters and ordinary persons prefer using kettlebells. You should start with a light kettlebell and use heavier ones gradually. Lifting too heavy a kettlebell can cause serious injuries to the neck, back and spine. It is a great rehabilitation tool, used for patients with disc injuries, to strengthen the spine. kettlebell exercise can be dangerous to those who have back or shoulder problems, or a weak core.
